Mysterious Kelimutu Lakes with colored water

Kelimutu Lakes in Indonesia

Today we are going to visit one of the most mysterious and amazing places on Earth, these are the Kelimutu Lakes near the volcano in Indonesia. These lakes are known all over the world because of their interesting origin and also amazing legend of the different colored water there. There are many resorts with uncommon colored sand like Kaihalulu Red Beach or Papakolea Beach. But no other place in the world has so unusual water.

Powerful volcano and colored lakes

Kelimutu volcano is located in Indonesia on the island of Flores. Its height is 1639 meters. The last eruption was in 1968, therefore you can stay calm and not worry that the volcano will erupt during your visit to this picturesque place. If you want to see both active and safe volcano, artificial one can be found in Beach Sigayya. Kelimutu volcano is included in the "Ring of Fire" of volcanoes encircling the Pacific Ocean. In the collapsed vertexes of the volcano, they are also called calderas, were formed amazing three colored lakes Kelimutu. These lakes have the depth of 1650 meters, the same as the depth of the volcano. The colorful lakes are also seen from the height of the helicopter while flying over the island of Flores. They especially stand out against the background of lush green lake, painted in a bright turquoise color. Waters of these lakes have the red and green colors. But this is not the only feature of these unique volcanic lakes.

Kelimutu Lakes in Indonesia

Riddle of varicoloured water

From time to time the color of the water in the lake changes. A lot of legends are connected with all these amazing weird and mysterious processes. For example all the inhabitants of Flores are confident that after death the souls of the dead fall into one of three lakes of Kelimutu:

  • In the lake with the green colored water are the souls of those who have lived a decent life, and left in their old age. This lake is called: Lake of the Old or Tivu-Ata Mboup.
  • In the lake, the waters of which are painted in bright turquoise color, are the souls of the dead who died in an innocent young age. It is called Lake of Boys and Girls or Tivu-Nua Muri-Koog-Tai.
  • Third lake water is colored in red and sometimes it turns dark brown color. These waters are the eternal home for souls who in their life have shown themselves as scoundrels and villains. The name of the lake is appropriate - Lake of Evil Souls, or sometimes it is also known as Enchanted Lake or Tivu Ata Polo.

Symbolism of mysterious lakes

There are many places with beautifull lakes - national park in Croatia Plitvice or freshwater McKenzie Lake Beach in Australia. But in Indonesia two of Kelimutu Lakes are separated by a thin partition that is the wall of the crater of the volcano Kelimutu. Flores residents believe that it is not by accident. According to their beliefs, the thin wall is a symbol of a thin and fragile line between good and evil, between evil and innocence. Lake with the green water, the Lake of the Old, is set outside and serves as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom that come with age.

Magnificent place, created by nature

The skeleton of Flores in Indonesia has a true miracle of nature; therefore this place attracts tourists from all over the world. Here at the top of the volcano Kelimutu at height 1639 meters there are three unusual crater lakes. Even though the described above legend is a great story that is also a very profound belief of the local people, the secret behind the color of the lakes is in the minerals that lie at the bottom of the lakes. The chemical nature of those minerals in contact with water creates different colors.

Even though it is a great touristic place, the lakes are not easily accessible. They are not especially made and prepared for the tourist’s leisure. Though it is truly a magnificent place with the mysteries atmosphere, and truly worth your visit! No one artificial resort, even prominent Glass Beach or dramatic Crosby Beach, can be compared to virgin and majestic Kelimutu Lakes.
