Impressive waterfalls of Plitvice (Plitvicka) Lakes

PlitviPlitvice (Plitvicka) Lakescka Lakes (cr. Plitvička jezera) is a national park in Croatia, situated in the central part of the country, in the County of Lika-Senj (90.7%) and Karlovac (9.3%). There are only few places in the earth with soo virgin nature, like magnificent Maya Bay or unforgettable Cabo de Gata beach. The water of the river Koran, flowing through the limestone over thousands of years have brought travertine barriers. From these natural wonders and actions were created the natural dams which in turn have led to the creation of a series of amazing lakes, waterfalls and caves.

Untouched natural balance

The name "Plitvice Lakes" was first recorded by the priest from Otočac Vukasovichem Dominic in 1777. April 8, 1949 Plitvice Lakes received a National Park status, and since 1979, the National Park Plitvice Lakes is included in the "World Heritage" list by UNESCO.

Prior to 1958, the park was not available for the tourists. In 1958, Josip Movchan, director of the park, began the construction of pedestrian paths, and now in addition to the wide network of routes decks are clean trains, the park offers some routes on ferries and pleasure boats on electricity. In the lakes of the park it is strictly forbidden to swim and even picnic, make fires, or to come with dogs. This is due to the strict order preservation of the natural balance, which for many years stood for the local ecology.

The site of a battle

Plitvice (Plitvicka) LakesIn spring 1991, the territory of the park became the site of the event, called Plitvice Bloody Easter, the first armed clashes that led to casualties. During the Yugoslav wars the Plitvice Lakes have been the scene of fighting. Today the park is completely cleared, and tourist infrastructure restored and intensively, but in the vicinity of the park is still sometimes find some mines.

On its territory there are thousands of wild animals, including  bears, wolves and many species of rare birds. Animal kingdom in Plitvice Lakes in it's variety reminds world-known Loango National Park.

Riddle of waterfalls creation

The total difference between the level of the upper and lower lake is 133 meters. Uppermost lake stage is flooded by two small rivers Crna and Biela. Plitvice Lakes is one of the few places on our planet where every year new waterfalls are created, which is associated with the origin of limestone local mountains. Fallen into the water from the leaves and twigs of trees the neighboring waterfalls are quickly covered “chalk plants", which when dying, turn to stone and form solid deposits overlying the river. Water, gradually eroding these "dam", forms new waterfalls. In no one human-made resort, even prominent Beach Sigayya or dramatic Crosby Beach, you can see such majestic nature.

Place of lakes and caves

The park is located in a mountainous area, the highest point of which is the Mount Mala Kapela (1280 m). Lake Park includes 16 large and many small ponds and is divided into two groups: upper and lower. The total area of lakes here is 217 ha which are fed by five rivers: the Koran, Crna, Biela, Plitvice and Riechitsa. There are about 30 waterfalls, and that due to blurring of rock and sediment form new lakes and waterfalls and gradually changes its configuration. Most lakes are named after people who drowned in them. In 2008, it was still allowed to swim in the lake Kozjak, but a large number of drowned people led to a total ban on swimming. So If you look for comfortable rest with all facilities better vacation You can have in Matira Beach in Bora Bora or Las Salinas Beach on Ibiza.

The park is also interesting because of its unusual caves; on its territory there are 20 caves, and of particular interest are the caves under the waterfalls. The most famous are Šupljara, the "cave without a floor and a ceiling," "cave-hole", Golubnjača, Crna pećina. Very similar cave, but much bigger, tourists can find in Puerto Valeyard Beach.
